haiz i'm in the midst of studying archi... and i'm studying about the Eiffel tower. It's pronounced as 'E-Fell', not 'I-Ferl', according to the French. whenever i go "let's go to the I-Ferl Tower!" the angmohs will look at me like i'm such a singaporean and go "HUH?" then i would insist and say "the I-Ferl tower, you know... the tall I-Ferl in Paris..." like as if their didn't know what is was! Jeez i'm such a throw face when they corrected me. but hey, the whole of singapore calls is I-Ferl, right?

but i tell you, it's absolutely takes your breath away when u stand right until the Eiffel Tower. You look up, it's just a messy yet organised sight of metel bars, bolts and screws, that brings you straight up to heaven. It's a straight route up and it keeps your eyes glued to it, all you hear are your own "wahs" and "oh. my. god. i can't believe i'm here." you want to touch it, but it's too far. It's HUGE, so magnificent, you wouldn't dare to go close to it, just to stand underneath and wow at the beauty of this humongous, colossal structure.

The Europeans, i swear, are obsessed with visual impacts. but smartly, that's what makes their country so attractive.
Every cathedral in each town are splashed with eleborate and extensive designs, you just cannot see enough of it. and the towns are scattered with sculptures that tells the town's history, reminding the people their sense of identity and how their forefathers fought wars, for freedom and rights, to what their country is today. maybe singapore should consider putting way those jarring coloured lions around Orchard and Raffles. You know those sculpture of a trishaw rider, and kids playing along Singapore River, in front of Inter-continental Hotel, they should put more of that around Orchard and even in neighbourhoods. 86% of the people in Singapore live in HDB estate, so their lifes start from there. so if they should be reminded of their identity, it should start from where they live. Surely, Singapore is very focused on tourism, but really, there's simply not enough things done to promote nation bonding.
In fact, HDB can fuse the different culture elements into its buildings right? It's great that most HDB flats have common designs, but it just lack something. something that only architecture can bring out. anyway, as what we learn, architecture is the manifestation of our culture, it tells what our society is like. i don't want to see singapore as a country of HDB flats. It's nothing new anymore. HongKong is also the same, if you minus the small alleys and the disturbing array of overhanging signboards. So what's so unique about Singapore? I really like the idea of giving the flats different colour paints according to the districts. They should really add more colours. Like the metal fences, for heaven's sake, it's boring to see green fences with green grass. and not to mention, i loved the idea when they decided to paint the bridge near clarke quay. Bring all those wonderful ideas to the neighbourhood!!! Really, i'm getting sick of CCK new town. Argh.
